South Park is a neighborhood in San Diego that is beaming with culture. From small boutique businesses to art studios, trendy cafe’s, and popular restaurants, South Park is a booming small business district. In 2015, an urban Target opened in this otherwise corporate-free area. With an aim at examining the impact, I created a book of photographs and interviews with small business owners in the area as well as a social mobile app to celebrate and help people share their experiences of the neighborhood.
For the book, I researched and interviewed five small-business owners and created a story about their businesses and the impact of the opening of the big-box store. I photographed signage, graffiti, and public art from around the neighborhood. Then, I designed a book with toned down, retro-inspired colors, and a simple three-column grid. To accompany the book, I designed a social app that allows users to share experiences they enjoyed in South Park. The same design elements from the book are used in the app. The user experience is simple with a page for each experience, the ability to comment, and favorite experiences.
