Type as a medium.
Portraits portray the subject by representing their visual form. Type portraits do that plus capture the idea of a subject by also communicating through the power of words. The shapes and value of type create the two-dimensional portrait, while the words communicate a message that the visual form alone cannot.
I created a series of three portraits only using type. The subjects are me, my husband, and our cat. I used selected words and phrases to create shape and chose words that represent the subject’s personality, goals, and my connection to them. The playful color pallet is combined with a loose and hand-drawn characteristic of the type.
